About me and this ‘log’…

February 16th, 2011

Name: Alok Mahendroo

Location: Kalatope-Khajjiar wildlife sanctuary, Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, India .

I live in a beautiful Himalayan village which falls within the official boundary of the rich Kalatope-Khajjiar wild life sanctuary, located in the vicinity of Dalhousie, Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh. The total area of the sanctuary is only 69 Sq kms, which is going to be denotified soon and reduced to 12 sq kms officially. But within this 12 sq km area lies a wealth of bio-diversity, which has been lying largely unexplored till now.

As soon I am out of my village, the realization of the beauty of nature is apparent.. and one cannot help but notice the beauty around. I was not exactly a nature freak, botanist or a zoologist, but living here has made me observe and appreciate all living things , big or small… I just wish to share these observations with other people and hope they too will appreciate it as I do.. and help in stopping the destruction of this place….

Wild flowers, fungi, lichens, beetles, birds, bugs, animals, tracking signs… there is a lot one can see and learn when one goes into a forest.. in fact there is not a moment’s boredom. Unfortunately I don’t own any fancy camera… but… whatever I have managed to capture with my old Nikon 2100… is out here for people to see…

While I am certainly not an expert.. at best described as an enthusiast.. I find that lack of information on the Indian species (especially in the lesser known areas of the Himalayas) to be seriously deficit, especially in this day and age of information sharing and availability on the Internet. This web-log will be an endeavour to share whatever knowledge I have been able to gather, of course with help from a lot of good people especially, among them are from http://www.mushroomobserver.org , http://www.flowersofindia.net, https://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix, http://www.mushroomexpert.com etc..

The web-log while providing information about various species, does not wish to duplicate the efforts of these forums.. but instead is localized documentation of whatever I find during my rambles in nature, concentrating on the areas I am visiting, which right now is the Kalatope-Khajjiar wildlife sanctuary, I am documenting whatever species I find by month… so that anyone who has a chance to observe them at a particular time can either find them by the month or by the tag search….

  1. Your work is amazing Alok… and your photo chronicles that part of India that not many have. All the best! and I hope to travel there some time soon.

  2. OOps I meant to say your photos chronicle… the dangers of typing too fast 😉

  3. Oh my God! what a negligence on my part. Alok Ji, I am visiting this blog for the first time ever, amazing, outstanding and useful work, keep it up….

  4. Thanks for reply Alok Ji, I do not expect any wrong identification as you have been long associated with the raw nature, even then if anything looks like to be discussed I will be more than happy to do so….

  5. I love the work you do and think it needs a wider audience. Therefore I have nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award. I know you say this isn’t a blog, but a log… but in a world where animals, insects and other fauna and flora run the risk of extinction, the message of conservation needs to spread. Do visit my blog for details… http://averilgomes.wordpress.com/2012/02/06/the-versatile-blogger-award/

To keeping the planet Green and clean!

  6. Hi Alok,

Great log, with a lot of useful information. Among your Sphingid moth pictures you have one of a live Clanidopsis exusta. Would it be possible to use it to illustrate my web site on the following page: http://tpittaway.tripod.com/china/c_exu.htm

    Regards,
    Tony

  7. Dear Alok,

Many thanks for the use of your photos, which I have already posted to the web. I’ve made them ‘hot’ so that they link through to your sanctuary web site. I must say, you live in a great place for nature. I have very fond memories of the Kulu-Manali Valley just down the road, where I spent a happy 2 weeks. Keep up the good work. It’s nice to come across someone so enthusiastic and good at what they do.

    Regards,

    Tony

  8. Dear Alok,
I saw your impressive collection of moths and the best part is that most of them are identified. I suggest you compile your lepidoptera data and publish as it will be a valuable contribution to science specially your moth data. You need to add distribution range and publish an inventory of Lepidoptera of Kalatope. If you are already doing it, great then. You can try and publish in Journal of Zootaxa, Current Science or Tropical Lepidoptera.

    Best wishes
    Shubha

    • Thanks Shubha,
I appreciate your comment … especially since it is coming from a person who has done a LOT in this field….

For the publishing this paper… I thought WE were already in the process… and Roger was already a part of the research team….
      regards
      Alok

  9. Great log, with a lot of useful information. but
in wild flower of April the photo of Primula denticulata and Cytocline purpuria was interchanged, please correct it.

    • Dear Dr. Pawar,
I am sorry but the Primula denticulata shown here is indeed Primula and I do not have any observation of Cyathocline purpurea… I am confused about which one you have mistaken it for…
      regards
      Alok
